After a long career as a competitive bodyboarder, winning over 30 events and competing around the world, in 2003, British bodyboarder Rob Barber decided to launch the worlds first Bodyboard holiday company. Barber says: “I was working for ThreeSixty Bodyboard Magazine and a big part of my job was to organise trips for pro bodyboarders to go on photo shoots – I loved putting them together and I decided that it shouldn’t just be the pro bodyboarders having all the fun”.

I set about the mission to offer bodyboarders of all abilities the chance to enjoy the best bodyboarding locations in the world, backed up with the best coaching and guiding.  

The company now offers 16 different bodyboarding locations across the world with every conceivable bodyboarders taste and budget catered for. With new riders being welcomed on to the coaching weekends  in Cornwall, England and top level riders being challenged to tackle the worlds best waves in the Mentawai Islands in Indo and something for everyone else in between.

“We make it our mission to find the best bodyboarding spots in the world, that cater for a wide spread of abilities. We organise quality accommodation, transfers, guiding, awesome places to eat, excursions and have a total focus on the crew scoring the best waves during their holiday with us,”Rob commented, which sees guests improve their riding in the most perfect conditions…

Destinations now include England (multiple coaching weekends in Newquay, Croyde, etc), Wales, Ireland, Portugal, Morocco, El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, California, Bali & Mentawai Islands. 

The trips range from one to up to three weeks long, some include multi-country holidays like our tours through central America, to european beach breaks, secret Morrocan spots and new wave garden adventure at Surf Snowdonia in Wales.

Barber commented: “Our aim is to welcome bodyboarders of all abilities to the worlds best waves and epic locations, we offer coaching for all levels, video feedback, photography and guiding at all of our locations. Each rider is treated as an individual and we take any logistics stress out of the trip. Great accommodation, epic culture and tried and tested waves in each location. Rob continued, saying “Bodyboarding has been a life long passion of mine and helping other riders get the absolute most out of the worlds best bodyboarding destinations is our primary aim. Creating life long memories and sharing epic sessions is the number one goal for every trip!”

No verão europeu as pequenas ondas e a escassez de ondulações ditam o ritmo do dia a dia e das sessões dos bodyboarders portugueses. No entanto, no outro lado do globo, o Oceano Índico parece ganhar vida e abraça a temporada das ondas numa batida crescente. The season’s on!

Quinta-feira é o pontapé de saída para o Santa Cruz Bodyboard Pro, a primeira etapa a contar para o Circuito Europeu de Bodyboard (ETB). Será a primeira vez na história que a Praia de Santa Cruz recebe uma prova do Europeu de Bodyboard, inserida no festival Ocean Spirit.

O Bodyboard Pro Santa Cruz será a prova mais valiosa do circuito 2017, avaliada com 4 estrelas (no máximo de 6) e contará com um prize money total de 7000€ que será distribuído por única categoria, a Open. Estes dois dados são certamente fulcrais para que os melhores riders mundiais estejam presentes em Santa Cruz.

Portugal tem bastante tradição no bodyboard, tendo já vários campeões europeus e mundiais nas últimas duas décadas. Em 1998, por exemplo, fizemos o pleno com Hugo Carvalho, mais conhecido por “Jamaica”, que venceu no masculino, e Catarina Sousa no feminino.

Será que este ano teremos novamente um português a levantar o troféu? Candidatos não faltam, como é, por exemplo, o caso de Dino Carmo que tem estado em grande forma nas etapas mundiais de 2017.

Com presença confirmada já se encontra Pierre-Louis Costes (campeão mundial em título), Alex Uranga (campeão europeu em título) e Amaury Lavernhe. Só falta mesmo Neptuno estar do lado da organização e certamente teremos quatro dias de grande acção em Santa Cruz.

Dia 20 é quando a história começa a ser escrita em Santa Cruz.

Hoje, terça-feira, o Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit vai acolher a prova de Natação em Águas Abertas, à semelhança do que já esteve agendado também no ano passado e que acolheu algumas das figuras da modalidade a nível nacional. A chamada está marcada para as 9h30.

Ao final da tarde, decorre uma demonstração de Tow Out de Bodyboard e Surf, iniciativa a cargo de Hugo Pinheiro, conhecido bodyboarder português e várias vezes campeão nacional. Entre os convidados estão os surfistas Robertson Gonçalves, Francisco Cruz, Tiago Santos, Francisco Santos, e os bodyboarders Bernardo Tomé, Daniel Fonseca, Manuel Nascimento e Dino Carmo.

Depois de The Fucking Bastards que animaram o Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit este domingo, hoje a noite está reservada a ritmos africanos. A festa faz-se hoje ao som de Spencer que abre a noite para Yasmine. A cantora traz-nos êxitos recentes como “Esquece o mundo”, ou o sucesso “Perfume” que conta com a participação de Badoxa.

O Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit continua ainda a pedir aos visitantes que tragam bens alimentares não perecíveis ou produtos de higiene e, assim, de forma fácil, contribuam para uma causa. Numa parceria com a Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa, estes alimentos serão distribuídos junto das famílias mais carenciadas do concelho de Torres Vedras.

Aparece! 

Depois de ter registado duas finais consecutivas na perna sul-americana da APB Tour, o sul-africano Iain Campbell encontra-se agora em primeiro lugar do ranking mundial. Campbell deixa o seu conterrâneo e amigo Jared Houston, em segundo lugar, a uma distância de 110 pontos.

Nas presenças lusas, Dino Carmo (na foto) é o atleta melhor posicionado, em 9.º lugar, com 6850 pontos, isto depois de ter ficado em 9.º lugar na última etapa em Antofagasta, Chile. Tó Cardoso, por sua vez, encontra-se em 17.º lugar do ranking, com 5690 pontos, depois de ter ficado em 13.º lugar no ABF 2017. 

Até ao momento foram realizadas cinco etapas (Pipe, Teahupoo, Itacoatiara, Arica e Antofagasta) e ainda temos seis pela frente até ao final da temporada, incluindo a série de três eventos que compõe a perna portuguesa (Sintra, Nazaré e Viana do Castelo). 

O Sintra Portugal Pro, etapa de 4000 pontos, tem lugar entre 12 e 17 de setembro. Depois segue-se o Viana Pro, também com 4000 pontos, e o Nazaré Pro que põe em jogo 5000 pontos.

Moroccan wildcard and aerial enthusiast Brahim Iddouch has won the Antofagasta Bodyboard Festival Pro Men’s Division today in rough but contestable 2 – 3 metre waves at La Cupula, Antofagasta. A consistently in-form Iain Campbell simply could not find the waves or the scores to keep up with the high-flying Moroccan in the Men’s Final, seeing him on the podium for the 3rd consecutive time and very much in the race for the world title this year.

Iddouch was in scintillating form from the get go, launching a huge ARS in the opening minutes of the 30 minute final, but failing to control the intense landing. Not one to hold back, Iddouch shook it off to quickly post the scores he needed early to stay ahead of South Africa’s Iain Campbell who seemed out of synch with the waves compared to previous heats.

Iddouch understandably ecstatic after the win, particularly given his preparation:

“This is just a crazy thing for this to happen. The last time I won was in 2012 in Brazil, so after that I have never won an APB event again. It was really difficult this year to prepare because since November 2016 I haven’t been able to get too much surf because I hurt my knee. After this I surfed maybe 20 times before coming here, and then I didn’t surf a month and a half because of Ramadan. So, I went straight to Arica, surfed there, then came here and it just happened! I didn’t think that I was going to win, but that is competition.”

A clearly disappointed Iain Campbell wasn’t completely deflated after the result in the final, given that he will most likely jump into first place on the ratings for the world title: “It’s hard to say how I feel like being in the lead on the rankings. I have only ever been here once before (last year). So, I am kinda trying to brush it off a little bit and not put too much pressure on myself for the rest of the year I guess.”

Iain was in the running for the world title last year leading into the final event at Fronton, a situation that was new to him at the time, and the pressure of a potential world championship was a lot to take in. “I definitely put too much pressure on myself towards the end of last year. To be in this position again is pretty good and I am feeling pretty confident. I know that my riding is going well, with these last three podiums showing it I feel,” he said. 

Chilean Nelson Fores has backed up his Pro Junior victory in Itacoatiara with another win in Antofagasta, while former World Champ Neymara Carvalho, from Brazil, won the Womens Division where 3 years ago she retired from competitive competition. An unbelievable return to the world stage in Chile, she has achieved the impossible!

The next event on the World Tour is the Tahara Pro in Japan, which will feature both Men’s and Women’s divisions, but which is a lower rated event (1 Star).The European leg of the tour is where the action will really heat up starting with the Sintra Pro (4 Star) in early September. Stay tuned.

Decorreu este sábado o primeiro dia desportivo da 11.ª edição do Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit, dia em que já foram coroados os primeiros vencedores. Desde a praia do Mirante à praia do Amanhã, em Santa Cruz, Torres Vedras, o maior festival de desportos de ondas acolheu ao longo deste sábado as provas do Circuito Nacional de Kayaksurf e Waveski (CNKW) e do Circuito Nacional de Bodysurf Alma Portugal 2017. No domingo teve lugar o SUP Sprint Fun.

A partir de 20 de julho terá também lugar a primeira etapa do Circuito Europeu de Bodyboard (ETB) e a meio da semana haverá uma sessão de tow-out. Mais info em breve. 

A primeira noite do evento foi de enchente. Mais de 9.500 pessoas encheram a Aldeia Neptuno, na sexta-feira, para a abertura do evento e para receber o DJ D-One e Regula. O MC português que começou a rimar em 1996 e desde então não parou mais foi, nesta primeira noite, um verdadeiro chamariz para os visitantes do Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit.

Na cerimónia de abertura da 11.ª edição do festival, o presidente da Câmara Municipal de Torres Vedras, Carlos Bernardes, recordou que este é um eco-evento com “Sê-lo Verde”, ou seja, que aposta em medidas de valorização e promoção da vertente ambiental. “O Santa Cruz Ocean Spirit é um dos principais festivais de desportos de ondas, que acolhe este ano nove modalidades em dez dias de competição. Quero deixar uma palavra de apreço a todos os parceiros do evento, aos voluntários… São mais de 350 as pessoas que estão envolvidas e que contribuem para a grandiosidade deste evento”, começou por dizer o autarca que agradeceu ainda à Promotorres EM, que assume este ano um papel preponderante na gestão do evento.

No sábado, a festa continuou primeiro com o DJ João Dinis e depois com Virgul. O ex-membro dos Da Weasel lançou um novo single em abril. Chama-se “Rainha” e surge depois do sucesso tremendo de “I Need This Girl” e “Só Eu Sei”. Recorde-se que, antes da carreira a solo, Virgul deixou a banda Da Weasel para pertencer aos Nu Soul Family. 

De recordar ainda que, este ano, todos os visitantes são convidados a trazer bens alimentares não perecíveis ou produtos de higiene e, assim, de forma fácil, contribuir para uma causa. Numa parceria com a Cruz Vermelha Portuguesa, estes alimentos serão distribuídos junto das famílias mais carenciadas do concelho de Torres Vedras.

Dez dias de pé na areia, com muito boa disposição, desporto e animação nocturna que os visitantes não vão querer perder.
