The World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King 2018 launches new format and becomes the first professional event in the world that distributes $36,000 in prizes.

Gran Canaria will host a new edition of the Gran Canaria Frontón King, one of the most recognized international tests of bodyboarding. From October 20 to November 3, the beach of El Frontón, in the municipality of Gáldar, will become the epicenter of the World’s best bodyboarding.

In this edition the international championship modifies its format and becomes World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King. The promoter, Epic Events, has introduced new changes to help improve the show and the participation of the best riders in the World. For the first time in the history of bodyboarding a professional championship will have an amount in prizes amounting to $36,000 to distribute in the open and female categories.

Another novelty of this edition will be to eliminate the previous qualifiers that give access to the main event. All the participants, including the seeded ones, will compete from the first eliminatory round. This new competition format will greatly increase the show as it will give the option to see the best riders in the world compete from the start of the race.

The World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King will have its inaugural act on October 19 in the Plaza de Santiago, in the municipality of Gáldar, with the presentation of all registered riders. The start of the event will be marked by the celebration of World Cup Festival Gran Canaria Frontón King on the beach of the Hole of Gáldar on October 20, and with it the kick-off to the competition. A festival that will develop children’s games, clinics, concerts and a varied program of parallel activities for the whole family.

World champions such as Guillherme Tãmega, André Botha, Amaury Lavernhe and Alexandra Rinder are some of the most outstanding riders who have already confirmed their participation. They are joined by other renowned international riders such as António Cardoso, Alex Uranga, Alan Muñoz and of course a strong field of talented local riders. The Canarian representation will be headed by Diego Cabrera, Guillermo Cobo, Jonathan Vega, William Lujan and Lionel Medina. A list of participation that will be increased in the coming weeks with the inclusion of new international riders.

Undoubtedly, the World Cup Gran Canaria Frontón King 2018 will once again be a world reference in the celebration of a bodyboard event of the highest level. An event promoted by the Cabildo de Gran Canaria through the Insular Institute of Sports, which returns to fit this test in its Grand Sports Events program of Gran Canaria in the premium category, forming part of the Gran Canaria project, European Sports Island. Fundamental, again the support of the Tourist Board of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria and the City Council of Gáldar. This year’s edition also includes the sponsorship of Hubboards and Volkswagen, and the collaborating companies, Hydro Flask, RS Sonocom, Decotextil, Vert Magazine, Meduxa and 7UP.

Ayaka Suzuki conquistou hoje o título de campeã mundial de bodyboard na Praia do Norte, num Super Heat (Surf Off) que disputou até à última onda com Alexandra Rinder, isto depois de ambas empataram no ranking mundial.

É o primeiro titulo mundial da atleta japonesa que se mostrou radiante com o troféu:

“É fantástico! Faço bodyboard há vários anos e este título é muito bom!”.

Alexandra Rinder foi, por seu turno, vencedora do Nazaré Pro, a derradeira etapa da APB Tour 2018. Foi uma final emotiva e muito tática. A atleta canária precisava que um conjunto de fatores se conjugassem para ganhar, e conseguiu. Apanhou as melhores bombas de água e somou 11.75 pontos num último heat que disputou com a japonesa Sari Ohhara.

A Praia do Norte acordou com um mar fantástico e condições de excelência para o Circuito Mundial de Bodyboard, que, com a maré a encher, voltou a entrar em pausa durante a tarde, apesar de o mar hoje estar claramente maior do que nos dias anteriores.

Relativamente às prestações das atletas portuguesas, Joana Schenker foi a que chegou mais longe (1/2 finais) tendo terminado em 3.º lugar. Teresa Almeida, Madalena Valério e Madalena Padrela foram afastadas nos 1/4 de final, o que equivale a um 5.º lugar ex aequo.

A nova chamada dos atletas está marcada para as 7h15 de quarta-feira. O dia começará com o Round 1 do main event que contará com um atleta da Praia do Norte. António Cardoso, vencedor em título do Nazaré Pro, e que irá disputar Heat 1 com Tristan Roberts (África do Sul), Alex Uranga (País Basco) e Txomin Lopez (País Basco).

Para esta quarta-feira prevêem-se condições de excelência para o bodyboard, com ondulação um pouco maior e período mais alto – algo que deverá garantir o sucesso e a continuação em segurança desta prova que junta a elite deste desporto na Nazaré.

Realizaram-se hoje três rounds na competição feminina do Nazaré Pro 2018, etapa do Circuito Mundial de Bodyboard (APB Tour), e logo depois a prova entrou em pausa até às 7h15 de terça-feira, hora em que se realizará nova chamada aos atletas em prova.

O dia ofereceu boas condições de mar, mas as ondas chegaram pequenas para uma prova de elite, tendo a organização decidido pela interrupção da competição até terça-feira de manhã.

Durante a segunda-feira realizaram-se 3 rounds da competição feminina. As duas japonesas em prova mostraram o seu poder sobre as ondas da Praia do Norte, mas as atletas portuguesas mostraram que também estão na luta pelo título.

Sari Ohhara (13.10) e a atleta da Praia do Norte Teresa Almeida (11.45) pontuaram no primeiro heat do dia e passaram para a ronda seguinte. 

O round de amanhã contará, ainda, com a japonesa Ayaka Suzuki (14.75) e a brasileira Isabela Sousa (10.00) que reside em Carcavelos, apuradas do heat 2; a canária Alexandra Rinder (12.25) e a portuguesa Joana Schenker (11.40); bem como Alexandra Padrela (11.20) e Madalena Valério (9.00), ambas portuguesas e que mais pontos somaram no heat 4.

Esta terça-feira prevêem-se melhores condições de mar, com o crescimento da ondulação na proporção desejada para uma prova desta categoria que é, convém salientar, a última da presente temporada.

Para além da competição feminina, que deverá conhecer a vencedora e a nova campeã mundial amanhã, disputar-se-á igualmente a final das triagens masculinas, onde também já estão definidos os 7 atletas para o Grand Slam:

They are rivals dropknee and tomorrow they will be rivals prone – Dave Hubbard and Sammy Morretino, both from Hawaii were standouts during the first day of competition as Praia do Norte, Nazare finally came to life (after three lay days).

The arrival of an anticipated northwest swell this morning at Praia do Norte saw smiles form on officials’ faces, giving them the chance to get competition underway before much larger swells greet these shores towards the end of the week. A strong current came with the driving swells and a strong sideshore to onshore wind as well, making the conditions slightly rough on the edges. Had the wind been offshore, many on the beach believe the waves may have looked akin to a Skeleton Bay barrel mirror-image.

The strong current added another element to competitors’ strategies and tested their fitness throughout the day. It was nearly impossible for riders to paddle back out after a ride and still remain in the competition area where judges would recognize scores. This strong cross shore current meant that riders were forced to leave the water after their rides and run up the beach to paddle back out and find scoring rides again. This unusual element to the competition seemed not to faze some riders, but others were forced to adapt.

For Dave Hubbard, it seemed to suit him just fine. Entry into this event was Dave Hubbard’s return to APB Tour Men’s competition after he passed on his seeding from 2017 results for this year’s tour. Starting in Round 1, Heat 1, Hubbard was clinical in his approach to the challenging and powerful conditions along the shore, finding the scores he needed to lead his heats, even launching a well-executed ARS that gave the crowd something to cheer about.

Reigning APB Dropknee World Champion Sammy Morretino was another standout for the day, taking his high-octane riding into every heat and finding the ramps to see him execute some rides that the judges found more than pleasing. Sammy Morretino is very close to the crucial top 8 placing on the QEST so a strong result here can assure him a seeding into the Grand Slam events next year.

Current QEST ratings leader Isaias Ravyc of Brazil showed why he is in such a strong position, being one of the few riders during the day to find a clean tube ride and exiting cleanly. His countryman Socrates Santana, who is a two-time APB Pro Junior World Champion, who also happens to be sitting in 21st place on the QEST rankings and in desperate need of a strong result in this final qualifying event, found the waves necessary to see him within striking distance of improving his ranking and subsequently qualifying for the WGS top 24 next year.

Another stand-out during the day of competition was Pro Junior competitor Txomin Lopez of the Basque Country, who was able to find the rides to earn the highest heat score total of the Quarter Finals, 14 points. The young rider showed that the next generation from Europe are going to be a force to reckon with on the WGS in the coming years.

Regarding the Portuguese army, only Gonçalo Pinheiro is alive and will be competing on semifinal number 2 against Yoshua Toledo, Sócrates Santana and Txomin Lopez. Action is scheduled to continue tomorrow pending the official call at 7:15AM.

É já no próximo dia 16 de outubro que arranca a janela de espera da 1.ª prova de Bodysurf na Nazaré, o Ahua – Masters of the Temple powered by DMC Fins.

Serão 45 dias à espera das condições ideais para receber 18 atletas. A chamada para o dia do evento será feita com 72 horas (3 dias) de antecedência.

O Ahua – Masters of the Temple junta os melhores bodysurfers portugueses, que irão competir ao lado de grandes nomes do surf e bodyboard nacional e ainda 6 wildcards distribuídos por atletas da Nazaré (CDAN), Ahua e patrocinador principal, a DMC Fins.

De salientar a Expression Session que pretende juntar todos os presentes com o objetivo de celebrar aquele que será um momento histórico para o Bodysurf em Portugal e internacional.

A APB anunciou mais dois wildcards do The Nazaré Pro 2018. Os australianos Davis Blackwell e George Humphreys juntam-se aos portugueses Hugo Macatrão e Ricardo Rosmaninho, anunciados ontem, como wildcards da APB Tour.

“Estou radiante com o convite da APB para ser wildcard do evento. Tudo se posiciona para um excelente campeonato, e eu estou realmente ansioso pelo dia! Estou a adorar este local, que é incrível”, diz Davis Blackwell. 

Igualmente radiante com o convite da organização está George Humphreys (na foto): “Estou super feliz por receber um wildcard para o evento da Nazaré, um lugar bonito com ondas de classe mundial e excelentes atletas também. Estou empolgado para chegar lá com os melhores”.

Hugo Macatrão e Ricardo Rosmaninho são os wildcards do Nazaré Pro 2018 – prova Grande Slam do Circuito Mundial de Bodyboard (APB Tour). Os nomes foram divulgados, hoje, pela organização da prova.

Para Hugo Macatrão (na foto), natural da Nazaré, CEO no Pride Training Club Carcavelos, “É uma honra ser convidado a competir e a participar numa das etapas mais prestigiadas do Circuito Mundial”.

“A Nazaré é uma das melhores praias para a prática deste desporto!”, termina por dizer o bodyboarder de 34 anos. 

Por sua vez, Ricardo Rosmaninho, que foi 17.° na etapa do mundial realizada há dias em Viana do Castelo e tem vindo a somar excelentes resultados na sua carreira, diz estar “muito orgulhoso por este convite”. 

“É, sem dúvida, um ponto alto da minha carreira. Quero agradecer a oportunidade dada pela organização. Vou dar tudo dentro de água para a justificar!”, diz o atleta que representa as cores do Clube Naval Povoense (Póvoa de Varzim).

O período de espera do Nazaré Pro 2018, uma das mais importantes e decisivas etapas do Mundial de Bodyboard, arranca já a 4 de outubro (amanhã, quinta-feira) se as condições permitirem. 

Pelo quarto ano consecutivo, a mítica Praia do Norte receberá os melhores bodyboarders do mundo. Desde há 4 anos que a Praia do Norte faz parte do calendário oficial da tour da APB – Association of Professional Bodyboarders, que a classifica como uma referência para os amantes do desporto de mar.

Esta etapa do Grand Slam irá coroar os campeões (masculino e feminino) e contará com alguns dos mais experientes atletas da modalidade, como Joana Schenker, Alexandra Rinder ou o bodyboarder local António Cardoso que saiu vencedor na edição do ano passado.
